News:
Zambia Railways gains private investors.
On February 14, 2003 Zambia handed the rights to run its national railway for 20 years to a foreign consortium. This in exchange for an annual payment of 253 mio US$ and 5 percent of revenue. The consortium is formed from the mainly South African new Limpopo Bridge Projects Investments and Spoornet. The consortium wants to rehabilitate 510 km of track, rolling-stock and communications and other assets owned by Zambia Railways. At all 80mio US$ may be invested in infrastructure. Zambia Railways have a huge potential as a major link within the region. It connects to the mineral rich region of the South of the Congo Democratic Republic and has access through neighborinmg railways to ports like as Dar-es-Salaam, Beira, Maputo and South African ports.
